Brighton13-17 years
This inspiring study programme, with 20 hours of lessons per week, is specially designed for teenagers aged 13–17 who want to explore real-world issues as emerging global citizens, critically examine the challenges facing their generation, and develop the skills to navigate the world around them. Based at the University of Sussex - the only university campus in England that is surrounded by a National Park, the centre is just 10 minutes away by train from the cosmopolitan city of Brighton. This University campus, with many modern buildings and its award-winning architecture, can be described as a self-contained village.
The Programme
The morning Global English Skills sessions build overall language proficiency across all four core skills while exploring modern global issues. Students sharpen their public speaking and presentation techniques by analysing inspiring TED Talks and creating their own presentations, all while expanding their vocabulary around contemporary global topics.
These collaborative sessions prepare students for dynamic team debates. Through hands-on workshops focused on internet research, media literacy, and critical thinking, students investigate modern challenges, such as digital ethics, mental health and social equality and learn to evaluate sources, construct logical arguments, and propose practical solutions to the issues that impact their lives and futures.
Throughout the week, students collaborate to research and analyse a modern global issue, exploring how large-scale societal challenges connect to their own lives as older teenagers. Working in teams, they present their insights through creative media, such as blog posts, original songs, podcasts, or digital presentations. These sessions aim to develop not only students’ speaking and communication skills but also their social and interpersonal skills, as well as broaden their perspectives on life in the future.
A friendly competitive element adds to the excitement of Global Projects, with the Academic Manager or Centre Director judging the final presentations and awarding prizes to the winning team.
After lessons, students participate in a range of sports and recreational activities. This provides the opportunity to carry on learning outside the classroom in small, supervised groups at the same time as having some fun. Students will be able to choose their preferred sport or activity.
